What Internet Marketers Must Know About Customer Service

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

You may not realize it, but even if your business is online, it’s essential for you to provide good customer service. Customer service is at least as important to online businesses as it is to offline based businesses. On the internet, you are competing with at least hundreds of similar websites who are all trying to sell in the same niche. What will set you apart from all of those other sellers? This is why it’s so crucial to offer top notch customer service! People are most likely to buy repeatedly from a business that makes them feel cared for and special. On the other hand, if you have your business set up so that you have no personal contact with customers, people will be less likely to buy anything. If you follow these suggestions, you will be able to start giving your visitors good customer service.

Get a mailing address from each of your buyers and then, after they have purchased something from you, send them a handwritten note thanking them for their business. Of course, this could only be feasible if you have a smaller business. It’s little things like this that make you look great in the eyes of your customers.

Sending a handwritten thank you note for choosing you will often convince your customers to return to you when they are in need of your specific type of service again. And really, a quick little note should only take you a couple of minutes to write. However, this simple act could net you bundles of return customers.

Run a giveaway for past customers. This will encourage people to contact you. You needn’t offer something to each person who returns your message. You can make the contest run in any manner you choose. People get very happy when they win. Offer one of your products for free to a random response chosen from those who answer a question you send out. You could use the question to get business feedback, or you could simply ask a trivia question. Regardless of the type of question you ask, be prepared to receive lots of responses. You might even get mail from people who are not on your list yet!

Make sure you offer support for your products or services.

You’ll find that technology use is easier for some of your customers, and that others struggle. Customers will really like the added feature of getting free technical assistance, should they ask for help. You could build your reputation up and become very popular, indeed. Your customers will tell their friends, and they will tell their friends, and so on and so forth. By offering free support for your products and services, customers see that you care about more than just how much money you make. This will increase your business.

Once you start thinking about how to be a provider of good customer service, you will come up with lots of ways to do this. Some people still have anxiety about shopping on the internet because they feel customer service will be lacking, or they might even get scammed. When you show that your business is one that gives people good and personal service, you can help them to overcome these fears.
